AFTER almost 10 years the Norwood Football Club will welcome back three-time Hawthorn Premiership Player, Paul Puopolo to the Parade for the 2021 SANFL Season.
Puopolo started his career at the Parade in 2007 and played 68 Norwood games before being drafted to Hawthorn at the end of the 2010 SANFL Season.
The 32-year old was drafted with pick 66 by the Hawks and went on to play 196 games and kicking 185 goals.
Puopolo was a key cog in Hawthorn’s threepeat which saw him claim Premiership honours in 2013,14 and 15.
Puopolo’s ability to pressure the opposition and hit the scoreboard is something Football Operation’s Manager, Mark Ross identified to strengthen Norwood’s attacking prowess. Not only, does Puopolo bring nearly 200 games of AFL experience to the club, but he brings flair which will excite the Norwood faithful.
“Not only do we get a player back who has achieved the ultimate success at AFL level, but we get a well-respected player who has great football IQ which can help our group moving forward,” said Ross.
“We are delighted to welcome Paul, wife Carmel and daughter Giselle to the football club in 2021.
Puopolo said he was delighted to return to his junior club of Norwood and is looking forward to coming back to share experiences and develop the younger players coming through the ranks.
“It’s a bit of a different feeling since I left and now returning,” said Puopolo.
“Growing up playing for Norwood as a kid it holds a special place in my heart, and I’m delighted to return.
“The club gave me an opportunity when I first started, so I’m looking forward to returning back to the Parade and playing in front of our fans.
“Returning next season, I look to share my knowledge of the AFL to the players as well as develop my leadership.
“In this last little bit of my AFL career, I’ve spent a lot of time with the younger boys and I really enjoy seeing their development.
“So for me, it’s about becoming more of a leader which I’m looking forward to when pre-season begins.”
