Match Report – Lady Legs blitz Tigers at The Bay

Coming off a commanding victory last week, the focus was firmly on atoning for a heavy 73-point defeat in Round one against last year’s premiers in Glenelg.

In what was a beautiful night for football down at the bay, the challenge was on. Our Lady Legs were up for the fight. A fast start was asked for and the girls delivered just that. The heat was on, the game was being played at a fast pace and the intent was evident from our girls early that they meant business, kicking two goals into the wind to set up a six-point lead at the first change.

Glenelg lifted the work rate after quarter time, which meant we had a game on our hands. Kicking with the aid of the breeze the girls managed to score one major which was soon answered. The workaround the stoppages was fantastic with Leah Cutting back from AFLW duties giving us first use on most occasions which had a major impact on our ball-winning ability. Half time had the girls with their noses in front still by six points.

The third quarter was a real battle with stoppage after stoppage, the game had become very contested. The focus was on keeping Glenelg at bay, while they had the breeze and stopping them from scoring. Although we did not score, Glenelg was kept to three points only.

Heading into the last quarter with a three-point lead, the Lady Legs were challenged to fight hard, be desperate and lift the work rate. We’d saved the best till last, right from the first bounce it was clear that the girls were not going to let this game slip. Our defence was rock solid as it had been all day, our midfielders were working overtime and our forwards worked tirelessly to lock the ball inside forward 50. A four-goal to zero last quarter completely blew Glenelg off the park, Alana Lishmund became the focal point having an absolute purple patch kicking three goals in a short time to finish the game with four. A late goal to Cutting sealed the deal, to see the Lady Legs run out winners by 27-points.

Dominate performances once again by the youngsters in Sachi Syme, Alana Lishmund, Lana Schwerdt, Jade Halfpenny and Tesharna Maher were complimented by the experienced heads of Leah Cutting, Sophie Armitstead, Nicola Burns, Ali Ferrall and Ashlee Gould.
