Disappointing day for Norwood’s Juniors at Glenelg

Norwood’s U18 side sustained a 104-point loss to Glenelg at a muddy Stratarama Stadium on Saturday.

With both teams unable to hit the scoreboard within the first 10 minutes of the game, Glenelg broke the deadlock to kick the first of 15 unanswered goals on its way to a 1.2-8 to 16.16-112 win.

Norwood’s Jaidyn Mead continued his impressive form on an otherwise disappointing day for the Redlegs, collecting 26 disposals including 17 rebound 50s, whilst Noah Daw and William Rowlands both had 18 disposals each.

The Bays led by 12-points at quarter time, and 30-points at half time, with the Redlegs held scoreless in the first half.

It wasn’t until the 23rd minute of the third quarter that the Redlegs would register their first score, with Rowlands kicking a behind in the shadows of three quarter time.

Levi Johnston kicked Norwood’s only goal of the day in the 21st minute of the fourth quarter.

Norwood was again missing captain Jacob Jones and defender Calem Krollig who featured in the Reserves game.

Jones had 15 disposals and nine tackles and Krollig had eight disposals.

The loss now sees Norwood (7th) and Glenelg (6th) both tied on six wins and seven losses in 2023.

Norwood’s U16s finished strongly but couldn’t overcome second-placed Glenelg, losing by 16-points in tricky conditions at Stratarama Stadium on Saturday.

After trailing by 42-points at three quarter time, the Redlegs kicked five goals in the last quarter to outscore the Bays by 26-points but it was too little too late as Glenelg recorded a 7.9-51 to 9.13-67 win in a rain-affected game.

Despite the loss the Redlegs had some standout performers, with Jack Hayter again leading the way with 29 disposals, eight tackles and two goals, along with Darcy Speyer (28 disposals) and Harry Lake (24 disposals, 10 tackles and a goal).

Cody Minervini and Mitchell Stevenson also kicked two goals each.

Norwood trailed by 11-points at quarter time, but a disappointing second term was ultimately where the game was lost, as Glenelg went on to kick five unanswered goals before the Redlegs converted through Minervini just prior to half time, bringing the margin back to 35-points.

Glenelg scored the only major of the third quarter, stretching the margin out to a game-high 42-points at three quarter time.

With the game seemingly out of reach Norwood owned the last quarter, with goals to Hayter, Minervini, Stevenson and Lake reducing the margin to 16-points at the final siren.

Norwood’s U18s and U16s face Woodville-West Torrens at Coopers Stadium next Saturday.
